Considering that you are here on this page, it seems that you are struggling with a slow Mac and looking for solutions. No problem! You are on the right page as this article will provide you a couple of easy and quick tips for revitalizing your Mac, its speed, and performance. You will read how by purging unnecessary files, upgrading the hard drive and RAM and restoring Mac to factory settings, you can speed up your Mac system.

As Apple releases the new generation of Mac OS X each year, system requirements also get increased automatically, off course for good reason only. To support the sophisticated memory hungry applications, you need better hardware arrangements. And if you don’t upgrade your hardware such as RAM or Hard Drive then you will lack in terms of space and memory. As a result, your hard drive won’t be able to support the sophisticated applications and new data as well. A filled hard drive and insufficient RAM can make your system terribly slow.

Upgrade the Hard Drive

If your Mac system has become terribly slow, then first check the disk capacity. There are high chances that your disk size is running sort of space or that it has faced some mechanical failure. To check the disk page, perform the following steps:

If you want to speed up your Mac’s performance, then increase the disk size to make space for new data and sophisticated apps and software.

  • Open up the ‘Finder.'
  • Navigate to your hard drive
  • Select it, and then click on ‘File’ on the menu bar
  • Then, click on ‘Get Info.’
  • The Get Info pane shows up the total hard drive capacity and the used disk space
  • If you have less than ten gigabytes space, then you need to create space either by upgrading hard drive size or deleting unwanted files and data.

Upgrade the Memory

If you are using a Mac device with two gigabytes of memory, then trust that you are having the least amount of memory required for supporting the Mac software structure of modern versions of Mac OS X.

Low RAM is an evil to your Mac, thus, consider upgrading the RAM if you are facing system’s performance issues.

Purging Unnecessary Files

Over the years of usage, uncountable number of files get created and stored in your system. Sometimes, the system gets slow because of some troublesome file that remains hidden at hard to find places. To clear such files, you need to perform PRAM reset. PRAM reset considerably improves system performance by clearing caches on your logic board. These caches are hugely responsible for making your system sluggish. To reset PRAM, perform the following steps:

  • Shutdown the Mac.
  • Then, reboot your computer.
  • As the system reboots, hold down [Option] + [Command] + [P] + [R] keys together.
  • Now, the Mac will reboot once again.
  • Then, release those keys.
  • You have now successfully reset your PRAM.

Restore Mac to Factory Settings

Despite trying out the tips mentioned above, if you still see no improvement in the speed and performance of your Mac, then try the most effective and assured method, i.e., reset Mac to factory settings. When you chose to restore Mac to factory settings, you are in a way commanding your Mac system to get back to its default and original factory settings.

During the process, the entire hard drive data, operating system, installed software, and applications will gat deleted. Along with that even the troublesome files, hard to detect junk files, malware will also get deleted. Restoring Mac to factory settings is like flushing your system and making it internally as clean as a new bought Mac. After you perform the Factory restore, only the original default settings that come inbuilt in a newly bought Mac system will retain, rest everything will get deleted.

Once you finish performing the factory restore, you can reinstall your old data. That means before you reset Mac to factory settings, you need to backup your data either by using iTunes or Time machine or external hard drive. While reinstalling the backup data into your Factory restored Mac, you should get selective and import only the requisite and useful data.

The only downside of factory reset is that after the process, you require reinstalling the apps and software. However, you can perceive this situation as an opportunity to install only the useful apps and discard the apps that you never use or seldom use.

Conclusion

Thus, if your problem is a slow and sluggish Mac system, then you can restore Mac to factory settings, but only after creating the data backup. Also to do that, you should consider upgrading the hard drive size and RAM. From time to time, you must clean erase the unwanted files and also reset your PRAM. This amount of care is desirable if you want your Mac to run at the peak of its performance.
