What is .NET?
Microsoft .NET is simply something you need on your Windows PC to run our software.
.NET is a software development platform for general use, similar to Java. At its coreis a virtual machine that transforms the intermediate language (IL) into machine code. High-level compilers for C #, VB.NET, and C ++ are provided to convert source code to IL. C # is a new programming language, very similar to Java. An extensive class library is included, with all the features that one would expect from a contemporary developmentplatform - Windows GUI development (Windows Forms), database access (ADO.NET), webdevelopment (ASP.NET) , Web Services, XML etc.
When was .NET announced?
Bill Gates delivered a speech at Forum 2000, held on June 22, 2000, describing the version of .NETvision. The July 2000 PDC had a number of sessions on .NET technology and delegates received CDs containing a pre-release version of .NET framework / SDK and VisualStudio.NET
